A Closer Look at Your Vehicle’s Steering & Suspension

At Calderon’s Tires, we’re known for our tires and wheels, but that’s not everything you’ll find us working on in the service bay. We can also assist with steering and suspension services, including the installation of lift kits and leveling kits.

The steering system and the suspension system are often grouped together (i.e. “steering and suspension system”), but these are actually separate systems. Due to their interconnected roles in how a car drives and feels on the road, people often refer to these systems as one.

What is the Steering System?

The steering system allows the driver to control the direction of the vehicle. While everyone knows the steering wheel plays a big role, there are several important parts that make up a modern car’s steering system. These include the steering wheel, steering column, steering gear, tie rods, and the electric power steering system.

Here’s how it works: when the driver turns the steering wheel, that movement is transferred to the wheels—typically through a steering shaft connected to a gear assembly. This assembly amplifies the force from the steering wheel and directs it to the wheels, making it easier to steer.

Older or simpler vehicles use a rack and pinion system. In this setup, turning the steering wheel moves a gear that slides a bar left or right, turning the wheels.

Modern vehicles use power steering, which can be hydraulic or electric:

  • Hydraulic Power Steering: Uses hydraulic fluid pumped into a cylinder when the wheel turns, helping move the gears and wheels.
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS): Uses electric motors to assist steering, offering easier control with less effort.

In all vehicles, small adjustments to the steering wheel create movement in the wheels, giving the driver precise control at all times.

What is the Suspension System?

The suspension system helps provide a smooth and comfortable ride. It includes springs, shock absorbers, struts, and control arms working together to absorb bumps and vibrations from the road, keeping the vehicle stable.

There are also aftermarket suspension upgrades such as lift kits and leveling kits. These help raise the vehicle’s height for a specific look or to improve off-road capability.

Why are Steering & Suspension Important?

The steering and suspension systems are essential to your vehicle’s safety and performance. Problems in the steering system can make the car difficult to control, while suspension issues can cause a rough ride, vibrations, and poor handling.

What are the Signs of Steering & Suspension Issues?

If you experience any of the following, it’s time to reach out to a professional mechanic or repair shop:

  • Difficulty steering or turning the wheel
  • Uneven tire wear
  • Vehicle pulling to one side
  • Noises when driving over bumps
  • Excessive bouncing or swaying
